The Americans with Disabilities Act is a federal law that makes disability discrimination illegal in the workplace, public transit, businesses open to the public, telecommunications, and in the providing of state and local government services. In the employment context, employers that have 15 or more employees, including state and local governments, employment agencies and labor unions, are covered by the law. Generally, employers must provide people with disabilities equal opportunities at work. This makes discriminatory recruitment, hiring, promotion, training, and pay illegal. It is also illegal for employers to discriminate against someone based on their association with a person who is disabled. Depending on the circumstances, employers have to provide accommodations to disabled persons at work.
There are many different kinds of disabilities covered by the ADA-AA, including but not limited to: cancer, diabetes, post-traumatic stress disorder, HIV, autism, blindness or low-vision, deafness or hearing loss, epilepsy, loss of mobility (i.e. use of a cane, walker or wheelchair), depression/anxiety, intellectual disabilities, traumatic brain injuries and more.
